Plans to construct a 157 bedroom three star plus hotel and an 869 space multi-storey car park at Liverpool John Lennon Airport (JLA) is in response to passenger feedback and demand for a short stay multi-storey car park at the airport, particularly from the growing number of business passengers who prefer the convenience that such facilities offer.
The short stay multi-storey car park will have parking over 5 levels with a 6 storey hotel on top and will be built on the site of the existing car park directly opposite the terminal. The car park design includes projected coloured glazed boxes on the exterior to add visual interest to the front of the car park.
The innovative construction uses ribbed pre-cast concrete decks with beam / column H frames and ‘pod’ stair wells, a technique that is also applied to the bedroom pods of the hotel. Constructed off site the pods reduce build time and ensure minimum disruption to the airport.
Neil Pakey, Chief Executive of Peel Airports said: "With flights from almost 60 scheduled destinations to Liverpool the demand for convenient hotel accommodation on site has never been greater. As the airport is open 24 hours a day, passengers arrive and depart all through the night and this development and the associated short stay multi-storey car park is a natural progression of improved on site facilities to satisfy the needs of today's airport user."
The important scheme should be complete in time for 2008 and the city's status as European Capital of Culture and the high demand for parking and accommodation by visiting Europeans.
